Mental math problems with answers
Free problem sets for every kind of arithmetic in the daily sprint. Each has 30 problems and an answer key, and prints on a page.
Problem sets
- 2-digit addition: Thirty sums of two two-digit numbers, most of them with a carry. Do them in your head, as fast as you can. e.g. 37 + 25
- 3-digit addition: Thirty problems adding a two-digit number to a three-digit one: the hardest addition in the daily sprint. e.g. 352 + 66
- 2-digit subtraction: Thirty two-digit subtractions, plenty of them with borrowing, which is where most people slow down. e.g. 75 − 25
- 3-digit subtraction: Thirty problems taking a two-digit number away from a three-digit one, many of them across a hundred. e.g. 278 − 47
- Multiplication facts: Thirty questions from the 2 to 12 times tables, in no order. Each one should come back as a memory, not a sum. e.g. 11 × 4
- 2-digit × 1-digit multiplication: Thirty problems past the times tables: a two-digit number times a one-digit one. e.g. 14 × 3
- Division facts: Thirty divisions you can answer straight from the times tables, up to 144 ÷ 12. Every answer is a whole number. e.g. 18 ÷ 9
- Dividing by 1-digit numbers: Thirty divisions of two- and three-digit numbers by a single digit, with answers between 13 and 29. e.g. 168 ÷ 8
- Dividing by 2-digit numbers: Thirty divisions by numbers from 13 to 29, the last problem of every daily sprint. Every answer is a single digit. e.g. 92 ÷ 23
- Mixed mental math: Thirty questions, mixing all four operations in the same ranges as the daily sprint, from easy to hard. e.g. 33 + 47
How to use them
- On paper: print a sheet. The answer key prints on its own page, so it can stay with the teacher.
- In your head: say each answer as fast as you can, time the whole sheet, then check against the key.
- Against the clock: practice times every problem for you, so you can see which kind is slowest.
Each set uses the same kind of numbers as the daily sprint, so a sheet a day is good preparation for it. The methods for every operation are in mental math tricks.
